Egg Donation

What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is the process by which a woman, who is usually younger, provides eggs (ova, oocytes) to another person and/or partner for purposes of assisted reproduction so that the recipient of the eggs can have a baby with a partner or using donor sperm.

What is the process of Egg Donation?

Once the ideal donor has been selected for the couple, the cycle of the donor and the woman to receive the ovules are synchronised. In charge of the synchronisation process are the gynaecologists and nurses who make up the egg donation programme unit, through specific treatment protocols.

To achieve success in egg donation, it is essential to prepare the endometrium of the receiving woman so that it has the optimal receptivity for the embryo implantation. This is achieved with hormone replacement treatments with increasing doses of oestrogen, measuring the thickness and appearance of the endometrium through vaginal ultrasound so that it is ideal for achieving pregnancy. In the case of using vitrified ovules, the preparation of the endometrium is controlled by normal ovarian function. Ultrasound monitoring is carried out on the ovarian cycle, observing the development of the follicle destined for ovulation that month and checking that the endometrium grows adequately.

Today, the donation of vitrified ovules from the ovule bank offers the same results as fresh donation, but with multiple advantages such as being able to make the donation using a natural cycle, avoiding a hormone treatment for 3-4 months which is essential in the donation of fresh ovules, avoiding potential errors in the medication of the selected donor, and finally, the treatment being carried out and adapted to the needs of the receiving woman.

On the day of the donation, the donor will be subject to a follicular puncture for the extraction of the ovules which will be inseminated with the sperm cells of the receiving couple through conventional IVF or ICSI. In cases of using vitrified ovules, the day of the receiving woman’s ovulation is the day that the selected and assigned ovules are devitrified and fertilised with the couple’s semen.

After fertilisation, the couple will visit the centre a few days later to carry out the embryo transfer.

Donor selection

Donors are selected based on different legal and medical requirements. This selection is controlled by the centre and seeks the physical characteristics most similar to those of the receiving woman (height, race, blood type, eye colour, hair type, etc.).

Donors must be young women (18-35 years old) and be in a good state of physical and psychological health.

An exhaustive medical history, ultrasound study and blood analysis are carried out to rule out communicable and genetic illnesses, and they are very closely evaluated by our psychological office.

When is Egg donation indicated?

Women with reduced ovarian function or who do not produce eggs.

Women with preserved ovarian function who, however, cannot use their own eggs:
- Women with chromosomal genetic abnormalities or diseases communicable to children
- Repeated IVF failures
- Insemination failures with ICSI
- Low response to ovarian stimulation
- Poor egg quality
- Repeated plant failures
- Inaccessible ovaries
- Age over 40 years with normal cycle
- Repeated miscarriage

Results

The rate of pregnancy in the ovule donation programme is 67% per attempt, rising to 90% in the accumulated pregnancy rate per donation cycle. The rate of pregnancy in in vitro fertilisation treatments is 47% per attempt, rising to 75% in the accumulated rate (these results are the average of the last 5 years).
