A growing number of couples have to resort to assisted reproduction techniques to become pregnant.
In Europe, the infertility rate now exceeds 15%, mainly due to women delaying maternity, and also due to other causes, such as low quality of semen as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle. At FIV Valencia we treat each couple in a personalised way, adapting the treatment to the diagnosis and making use of the latest technologies and best professionals in the field of reproductive medicine.
There are many factors which may cause infertility among women. Although age is the most common reason in recent years, there are others which impede natural reproduction in the majority of cases. Low ovarian reserve: We are born with a specific number of ovules which, as we release them, reduce in quantity and quality. Having a low ovarian reserve is one of the main reasons for infertility.
Advanced age maternity: From 35 years of age, the reproductive potential of a woman is reduced, and after 40 the rate of pregnancy with her own ovules is under 10%. Tubal factor: A lesion in the fallopian tubes or an unsuitable uterine morphology may be the cause of infertility.
Endometriosis: When the uterine tissue is outwith the uterus, reproductive problems also arise.
Other factors: Cysts, myomas, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, cancer, thyroid diseases and other chronic illnesses may also cause problems for natural reproduction.
The main cause of male infertility is azoospermia, the absence of sperm cells in the ejaculation. Although this is the most serious cause, there are others which prevent a man from reproducing naturally. A low sperm count, morphology problems, lack of mobility or even DNA may be the cause of infertility.
It is possible to improve human fertility through the introduction of indications and habits which enhance the capacity of the sperm cells. To do so, it is necessary to evaluate the state of health and habits, which have a great effect on the male factor. An inactive lifestyle, chronic illnesses, autoimmune disorders, obesity and tobacco use are important factors in male infertility.
Today, infertility is also frequently due to vasectomy. In addition to being reversible, it is possible to obtain sperm cells to fertilise an ovule in vitro, even when cryopreservation of a semen sample has not been carried out prior to the intervention.
