IVF with donated sperm follows the same process as traditional IVF, with one key difference: donor sperm is used instead of the male partner's sperm. After egg fertilization in the lab, the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus or frozen for later use. If previous IUI treatments have not been successful, IVF with donor sperm can offer a new opportunity to achieve pregnancy.

How IVF with Donated Sperm Works 

Using donor sperm in IVF involves taking fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries and to prepare the eggs for retrieval. Once the eggs are collected, they are fertilized with donor sperm in our lab. After fertilization, the healthiest embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation. An IVF cycle usually lasts around six weeks, although this may vary depending on individual needs and menstrual cycles.

Finding your ideal sperm donor

Donors are anonymous and selected by FIV Valencia specialists. The medical team will choose the most suitable donor for each patient. Once selected, the donor’s sperm undergoes a thorough medical screening to ensure it meets our high standards.

Sperm donor selection process

At FIV Valencia, we ensure that every donor meets our strict requirements. Here is how we carry out the selection:

  • Medical screening: We perform a full health check, including blood tests to detect infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis and syphilis. We also screen for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia.
  • Genetic testing: We carry out advanced genetic tests to ensure that the sperm does not carry mutations that could cause hereditary conditions such as cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy.
  • Donor counselling: We support our donors by providing them with all the guidance and assistance they need throughout the donation process.
Embryo transfer

Once the embryos are ready, we transfer one or two of those with the highest chance of success into the patient’s uterus. This procedure is straightforward, painless and does not require anaesthesia. Embryo transfer is performed on an outpatient basis and, after a short rest, you can resume your daily activities and return home the same day.

Post-implantation and pregnancy test

Approximately 14 days after the embryo transfer, you will take a pregnancy test through a blood analysis to check whether implantation has been successful. If the result is positive, an ultrasound will be performed 20 days later to confirm the progress of the pregnancy.

IUI with Donated Sperm

IUI or AI with donor sperm is a fertility treatment in which sperm is placed directly into the woman’s uterus to increase the chances of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes and fertilising an egg. This method is designed to enhance the probability of conception by bringing the sperm closer to the egg. 

In some cases, Artificial Insemination can be performed without medication, which is referred to as "natural AI." Your doctor will discuss the pros and cons of this option during your consultation, ensuring you are well-informed about the choices available. 
It’s important to note that AI may not be suitable for all patients. Based on your medical tests and clinical history, your doctor will determine whether AI is the most appropriate treatment for you or if another approach might be more effective in your case.
