How does fertility treatment with donated sperm work?
Fertility treatment with donated sperm can be applied in various Assisted Reproduction procedures:
In Spain, gamete donation is anonymous and altruistic. At FIV Valencia, we have our own sperm bank, allowing our specialists to select donors with the highest safety standards, carrying out rigorous medical and psychological evaluations. Our medical team carefully matches each patient with the most suitable donor, ensuring optimal success rates.
- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): A straightforward fertility treatment where the donor sperm is placed directly in the woman's uterus at the time of ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization.
- In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF): A more advanced procedure in which the woman’s eggs are fertilized with donor sperm outside the body in a lab. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus to attempt pregnancy.
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Part of the IVF process, where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg to promote fertilization. ICSI is often used in cases of complex infertility.

Cost of Fertility Treatments with Donated Sperm
The cost of fertility treatments with donated sperm varies depending on the procedure type, number of cycles, and any necessary tests or medications. How IVF with Donated Sperm Works
Using donor sperm in IVF involves taking fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries and to prepare the eggs for retrieval. Once the eggs are collected, they are fertilized with donor sperm in our lab. After fertilization, the healthiest embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation. An IVF cycle usually lasts around six weeks, although this may vary depending on individual needs and menstrual cycles.
Consultation with a gynecologist specialized in Assisted Reproduction: We will review your options and design a personalized plan to help you achieve your goal of becoming a mother.
Medical tests: We will carry out a comprehensive evaluation to ensure you are in optimal health for the process and to detect any potential conditions that could make pregnancy more difficult.
Before starting treatment, our patients receive comprehensive counselling to help them understand the emotional, medical and legal aspects of their treatment. We want them to feel informed and confident at every stage.
Donors are anonymous and selected by FIV Valencia specialists. The medical team will choose the most suitable donor for each patient. Once selected, the donor’s sperm undergoes a thorough medical screening to ensure it meets our high standards.
Our donors are selected based on several factors:
- Age
- Ethnicity
- Height and weight
- Eye and hair colour
- Family medical history
- Blood group
- Genetic compatibility test (optional)
At FIV Valencia, we ensure that every donor meets our strict requirements. Here is how we carry out the selection:
- Medical screening: We perform a full health check, including blood tests to detect infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis and syphilis. We also screen for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia.
- Genetic testing: We carry out advanced genetic tests to ensure that the sperm does not carry mutations that could cause hereditary conditions such as cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy.
- Donor counselling: We support our donors by providing them with all the guidance and assistance they need throughout the donation process.
Once the embryos are ready, we transfer one or two of those with the highest chance of success into the patient’s uterus. This procedure is straightforward, painless and does not require anaesthesia. Embryo transfer is performed on an outpatient basis and, after a short rest, you can resume your daily activities and return home the same day.
Approximately 14 days after the embryo transfer, you will take a pregnancy test through a blood analysis to check whether implantation has been successful. If the result is positive, an ultrasound will be performed 20 days later to confirm the progress of the pregnancy.
Throughout the entire process, the FIV Valencia team provides continuous support to its patients, offering guidance, answering all their questions and accompanying them at every stage of the treatment. Our goal is to help you feel informed, comfortable and confident on your journey to parenthood.
FAQs
Fertility Treatment with Donor Sperm
What information is available in a sperm donor’s profile?
Sperm donor profiles include details such as age and blood group. However, additional information is typically not provided to maintain the donor's anonymity, as required by Spanish law.
What are the risks of using donor sperm?
Using donor sperm is generally safe, but there are certain risks to consider. These include the possibility of multiple pregnancies (if more than one embryo is transferred) and the very rare risk of transmitting genetic conditions or infections, despite the stringent selection process. Our clinic ensures all donors undergo thorough medical and genetic screening to minimise these risks.
Do sperm donors undergo genetic testing?
Yes, all sperm donors at our clinic go through a rigorous genetic screening process to identify potential hereditary conditions or genetic mutations that could be passed on to a child. These tests screen for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and other hereditary diseases.
Can I know a sperm donor’s educational level?
No, the educational level of sperm donors is generally not included in their profiles. This information is part of the profile but is protected by donor anonymity laws.
How can I find a sperm donor for Artificial Insemination?
Our clinic selects anonymous donors for our patients from our own sperm bank.
Is IVF with donor sperm suitable for everyone?
IVF with donor sperm is an excellent option for many individuals and couples, including those experiencing male infertility, single women, and lesbian couples. However, it may not be suitable for everyone. Your doctor will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your medical and fertility history to determine if this option is right for you.
Can I undergo donor sperm insemination without medication?
Yes, it is possible to perform insemination with donor sperm without fertility medication, a process known as "natural AI." This option is generally suitable for women who ovulate regularly. Your doctor will assess whether this approach is appropriate for your specific circumstances.
Can I use the same sperm donor to ensure my children are biological siblings?
Yes, if you wish to have future children using the same sperm donor to ensure they are biological siblings, this is possible as long as it is planned in advance. At FIV Valencia, we offer this option subject to availability. Speak with our team to explore this possibility.
